POLICE: Man burns car for insurance money, sparks 150 acre fire

24 May 2011

LIMESTONE COUNTY - Authorities have say a Bryan man set his own car on fire and started a 150 acre grassfire back in July of 2008, where an elderly man died

Police say 59-year-old Joe Alley is to blame for the blaze

Alley was arrested Tuesday by College Station Police, but on July 30, 2008 Alley reported his Honda Pilot stolen at the Post Oak mall in College Station

That same day, the Limestone County Sheriff's Office found a car burned in the Southwest corner of 84-year-old Charles Day's property

That car was pin-pointed as the origin of the enormous fire. It may have contributed to Charles Day's death, as he collapsed trying to plow a fire line to protect his home

After months of investigation, Police began to question Alley's story, which became inconsistent according to the arrest report

Alley also reportedly had a long history of financial difficulty, including bankruptcy, two house payments he couldn't afford, and he had previously tried to trade his car but couldn't

Police said Alley burned the vehicle for insurance purposes

He's now charged with falsifying a report and has since bonded out of jail on $4,000 bail

At the time of the fire, Charles Day's death was ruled to be from natural causes and officials said he could have gotten overheated by the high temperatures. Need to know more about public liability insurance?

It's not clear right now if Alley, will face any additional charges in Day's death
